Travel Jamaica – Part 1: Discovering Paradise, One Road Trip at a Time

There is something undeniably magical about a road trip—the freedom of the open road, the anticipation of discovering new places, and the joy of creating unforgettable memories with the people you love. If you’re searching for an adventure that combines breathtaking scenery, rich culture, and authentic experiences, then it’s time to travel Jamaica with me.

I proudly call Jamaica home, and I truly believe there is no place quite like this island paradise. Our journey began in St. Catherine and took us across the island to the eastern parish of St. Thomas, a destination known for its hidden waterfalls, untouched rivers, and off-the-beaten-path treasures. Our first stop was the spectacular Reggae Falls. While the final twenty minutes of the drive were challenging, every twist and turn only heightened our excitement. Upon arrival, we were rewarded with cascading waters and a refreshing atmosphere that made every mile worthwhile.

From there, we continued to the enchanting parish of Portland, often regarded as Jamaica’s best-kept secret. Renowned for its lush rainforests, crystal-clear waterfalls, and secluded beaches such as Frenchman’s Cove and the Blue Lagoon, Portland is a destination that captivates every visitor. No trip to Portland is complete without stopping in Boston, the birthplace of authentic Jamaican jerk. We savoured a delicious late breakfast of traditional Boston Jerk—a culinary experience as memorable as the scenery itself.

Our adventure then led us to St. Mary, affectionately known as the “Banana Parish.” Blessed with fertile lands, St. Mary produces an abundance of bananas, coconuts, coffee, and pimento. Beyond its agricultural richness lies a parish steeped in history and natural beauty. Visitors can explore the historic Old Spanish Bridge, unwind in peaceful rivers near the Ocho Rios border, or snorkel and swim in the pristine waters of the Oracabessa Bay Marine Sanctuary. The parish is also home to the Ian Fleming International Airport, named after the famed creator of James Bond, who found inspiration in this picturesque corner of Jamaica.

The perfect finale to our road trip was Topioca Getaway, a tranquil eco-park nestled along the Junction Main Road in Devon Pen, St. Mary, approximately six miles from the historic Castleton Botanical Gardens. Surrounded by lush rainforest, the property offers the perfect balance of sunshine filtering through the trees and gentle rainfall that enhances its peaceful ambience. Whether you’re kayaking along the river, pedal boating, hiking scenic trails, relaxing by the private pool, or simply soaking in nature’s beauty, Topioca Getaway provides an unforgettable escape from the hustle of everyday life.

Every journey eventually comes to an end, and while saying goodbye to the adventure is always bittersweet, the memories remain. Road trips have a remarkable way of bringing people closer together, creating stories that are cherished long after the drive is over. This Jamaican adventure reminded me that some of life’s greatest treasures aren’t found at the destination alone—they’re discovered along the journey and shared with the people who matter most.

So, when was the last time you packed the car, hit the open road, and explored your own paradise? Jamaica is waiting, and this is only Part 1 of the adventure.
