Meet Rushawn Satchell, Author

When I was 25 years old, a friend of mine invited me to Pastor Howard Reynard’s church, also known as Pastor Goddy Goddy. At that time, I was failing at almost everything in life and desperately wanted to understand my purpose. I saw people receiving healing and deliverance from sickness, and I longed for that same breakthrough in my life. I prayed and hoped for a sign or a word from God that would give me direction.

One day, I decided to sow a seed of 2000 Jamaican dollars (JMD) into the church. Pastor Goddy Goddy prophesied over my life that I would write a book, and that this book would become the biggest blessing in my life. I remember laughing at the prophecy; I dismissed it as wishful thinking. I didn’t believe that writing a book could change my life or bring me success. I thought it was just another religious prophecy, and I laughed it off.

However, a few months later, something extraordinary happened. One day, I was at home when the Holy Spirit came upon me strongly and told me to check my email. To my amazement, I found a blog I had written about my high school experiences with bullying. I was stunned. That was when I realized that writing was my true gift. I had always poured my emotions and experiences into words, and now I saw a clear purpose for my life: to write and inspire others.

Inspired by this revelation, I decided to write my first book, titled Once A Broken Man, Now Walking in Victory By God’s Grace. I published it in June 2018. The book recounts my childhood, especially the struggles I faced growing up with bowlegs and being bullied in high school. Many people laughed at me and told me to focus on my career as a chef because they believed that writing could damage my reputation. They said it would make me look weak and pathetic, especially as a Jamaican man. But I ignored their negative feedback and pressed on.

When I published the book, initial sales were slow, only five copies sold. It took two months before I made another sale. Despite the setbacks, I remained determined. The Holy Spirit guided me to reach out to CVM TV, a popular Jamaican television station. I was eventually contacted for an interview, which boosted my book sales. I sold twenty copies online, but then sales stagnated again.

My family played a crucial role in supporting me. My aunt, Dian Parsley, bought the first 16 copies of my book from Amazon for me to sell in Jamaica. My mother also purchased fifty copies of my book from Amazon to help me get started. I approached many people to sell my book, but most laughed at me or dismissed my efforts. I faced discouragement from all sides, and I felt like giving up. But I kept pushing.

Then, my brother Raphael introduced me to digital marketing. He gave me access to his Udemy account, where he had purchased courses on Facebook advertising. I studied the courses and learned how to run Facebook ads to promote my book. Within one week of launching the ads, all my copies of Once A Broken Man were sold out. The success caught the attention of the Jamaican Star newspaper, and my book sales exploded internationally.

With the profits from my book sales, I enrolled in an associate degree program in marketing. I was determined to learn more and improve my craft. However, my journey took a difficult turn when I launched my marketing company. I ended up accumulating over 2 million Jamaican dollars in debt and faced multiple lawsuits. The pressure was overwhelming, and I made some reckless decisions, including gambling to pay off part of my debts. My family especially my mother, brother, and sister, helped me pay off the remaining debt so I wouldn’t bring embarrassment on the family.

The stress and shame became unbearable. I was bombarded daily with calls from people demanding their money, and I felt trapped. One day, overwhelmed by despair, I attempted to take my own life. I disappeared from social media and public life for seven years. During this period, I worked on myself, physically, mentally, and spiritually. I committed to personal development, reading countless books on self-improvement and purchasing courses on Udemy related to finance and success. I worked tirelessly on my mental health, trying to rebuild my life from the ground up.

After years of reflection and growth, I made a comeback. In February 2026, I published my second book, God’s Beautiful Grace: Once A Broken Man, Vol. 2. This was a personal development book centered on money management, adding value, and serving others. It detailed my journey from being in debt to becoming a successful author and entrepreneur. This book was a reflection of my growth and the lessons I learned along the way.

However, my journey to regain momentum wasn’t easy. Because I had been absent for more than seven years, many of my previous customers had forgotten about me. I had to implement aggressive marketing strategies to revive sales. Slowly but surely, sales of the second book picked up. I continued to learn and improve my marketing skills, knowing there was still much room for growth.
